These are the first new DAFs for theStockport-based haulier, which now specialises in transporting forklift trucks, which has hitherto been running 10 used DAFs on 57, 09 and 59 plates.
The new DAFs join a fleet of 35 tractors and 50 low-loader and semi-low-loader trailers, and transport manager John Chapman says the existing DAFs’ reliability has been matched only by the aftersales support from dealership F&G Commercials.
“F&G Commercials are great: we have our own workshops and the service personnel at F&G bend over backwards to support us,” asserts Chapman.
“We had an engine go down on one of the older DAFs,” he recalls, “and F&G were right there to give us all the technical assistance we needed.”
With vehicles acquired previously under leasing contracts, Walkers has also switched to outright purchase with its new XFs, choosing a three-year lease purchase hrough Paccar Financial.
“We looked carefully at the cost of leasing and it was three-quarters of the price of outright purchase,” explains Chapman.
“Through Paccar Financial, we were able to fund the vehicles and benefit from a two year DAF MultiSupport R&M contract and a third year driveline warranty.”
Chapman reports that fuel figures over 7.0mpg are par for the course on heavy haulage – with even his empty trucks running at more than 20 tonnes, due to the heavy, specialist trailers.
“We’re confident that, when they’re bedded in, the new Euro 6 XFs will turn in over 8.0mpg,” he suggests.
Robert Walker specified the he 460bhp Paccar MX-13 engine equipped with the MX engine brake driven through an AS Tronic automated gearbox.
The Super Space Cab equipment includes DAF’s air-management kit, the Rustica interior, refrigerator, Xtra comfort lower bunk, Truck Phone and Truck Navigation Radio.
