Ryder rolls out upgraded tyre management strategy with Bridgestone13 August 2015

Ryder is reporting significant cost savings after expanding its relationship with Bridgestone two years ago to a ‘strategic partnership’ level, to raise standards, cut tyre waste and boost fleet uptime.

The vehicle rental business has worked with Bridgestone for two decades, but the new-look partnership has already cut its tyre-related call-outs by almost a third.

"Two years ago, managing tyres was more difficult," says Chris Bull, Ryder's tyre and trailer operations manager.

"We had a good policy, but it was open to different interpretation across our 28 locations. My mission was to take a holistic view, looking at tyre strategy from the cradle to the grave."

He appointed seven 'tyre champions' to cover all regions, and site technicians were given full training on all tyre management issues.

Tyres are removed at Ryder sites or on the road by Bridgestone Partners (Bridgestone's breakdown service). All removals are recorded so that reasons for removal can be assessed.

Tread depth and position on the vehicle or trailer is also noted. The data is then checked by the tyre champions to see the reason for removal. Statistics are compiled and assessed to ensure that all Ryder and Bridgestone technicians are working to agreed standard procedures.

"Since the start of the contract, Ryder has achieved a 4.5% reduction in tyre replacement volumes due to increased focus on tyres, their husbandry and the management of correct air pressures," says Bull.

"It is proof that our policy is working, and we are well on track for achieving a further reduction this year."
