Safer truck design needs swift introduction, says FTA30 October 2014

The Freight Transport Association (FTA) is supporting calls for new safer and cleaner lorry designs to be allowed on Europe's roads as soon as possible.

The EU is currently debating whether to allow HGVs to have additional safety and aerodynamic devices at the front and rear of their vehicles.

The move has been agreed in principle, but some member states don't want to allow the new designs until after 2020, believing this would disadvantage particular vehicle manufacturers.

The FTA's call comes on the back of an open letter from the Campaign for Better Transport (see link below) to Robin Goodwill, parliamentary under secretary of state for transport, in which it urges him to prevent any such delays.

"We see no good reason for an artificial delay," says Christopher Snelling, FTA's head of urban logistics policy.

"Our members are always seeking to exploit new innovations to improve safety and reduce emissions, and are hopeful this new equipment could play a useful role on many vehicles."
