Safety climbs at Hills Waste with Volvo FH tractors 23 November 2015

Hills Waste Solutions has extended its bulk artic fleet with three Volvo FH-500 6x2 tractors, each of which has been specified with Volvo’s Active Safety package.

Supplied by dealer Truck and Bus Wales & West, the trucks also feature I-Shift automated transmission – another safety aid, according to the operator.

The Hungerford-based operator – part of The Hills Group – has specified autonomous emergency braking systems (AEBS) and adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning.

Active Safety also includes driver alert support, a lane support system, lane departure warning and lane change support.

Nathan Carr, fleet manager at Hills Waste, says AEBS, in particular, is “a major advancement in vehicle safety”. The company is one of the first in the UK to specify the feature.

“Being able to fit AEBS to these latest Volvo tractor units was very important to Hills,” adds Carr. “It underlines the company’s commitment to road safety for all road users.”

With AEBS, the truck uses a forward-facing camera and radar scanner to detect and identify objects in its path. The brakes are automatically applied if the object is stationary or moving slower than the truck.

Hills Waste’s latest FH tractors are maintained on a Gold R&M contract by the dealer. Annual mileage is expected to be 130,000km.
