Safety first for council with driver training event24 January 2014

Devon County Council has recently staged a road safety training day for some of its own employees, which was also attended by drivers from the local police and fire service, NHS workers and employees of local businesses.

The training was carried out by Driver First Assist (DFA), which aims to give professional drivers the necessary skills to deal with road traffic collisions (RTCs) in a bid to save lives. This includes managing the scene of an accident and learning sufficient first aid skills to enable them to perform potentially life-saving treatment if first on the scene.

The council decided to hold the training event to bolster its road safety strategy, as Nigel Flower, the council's safer travel strategic officer, explains: "We were really keen to learn more about the structure of the course… With a very mixed crowd in terms of experience, we were impressed with how well the instructors were able to cater for all abilities."

The council is considering establishing local trainers who can roll out the course across the county.

DFA instructors are acting or retired emergency services personnel, and the DFA course itself is a condensed version of the same course created and taken by members of the fire, ambulance and police services.
