Schmitz Cargobull reefers just right for The Ice Co 28 June 2013

The Ice Co has taken delivery of eight S.KO Cool refrigerated semi-trailers from Schmitz Cargobull.

Key to placing the order, says The Ice Co, was Schmitz Cargobull's high residual values and low maintenance costs, combined with its unusual semi-chassis, monocoque design.

Trevor Hudson, managing director of The Ice Co, notes that this sees Schmitz Cargobull's reefers sit approximately 100mm lower than many other trailers, while maintaining the same internal dimensions.

What's more, according to Schmitz Cargobull, the reduction in overall height reduces the frontal area of the trailer by approximately 2.4%, so cutting aerodynamic drag by the same amount – and leading to a claimed Tests 1.2% fuel saving.

The new trailers have each been built with Schmitz's Ferroplast panels, which use NX 17 foam technology developed by the firm to improve insulation and body strength.

They also have Schmitz's ROTOS running gear, which includes maintenance-free bearing, an innovative ventilation system for the disc brakes, weight-optimised brake calliper, multi-ride-height pneumatic suspension and EBS (electronic braking system) with RSP (roll stability program).

Other points worth noting include: the trailer's joint-free, in-process corner capping system, designed to ensure a water tight seal and hence maintain thermal efficiency; and a 45 degree angled rear step, for driver and delivery staff safety.

"This year is the first time we have ever bought our trailers outright: previously, we have always hired or leased the," comments Hudson.

"But the high residual values of the Schmitz Cargobull product makes ownership an attractive proposition, as we know they'll command strong resale prices in five years' time. Overall it is a very robust piece of kit," he adds.

The new trailers have been fitted with Carrier Transicold Vector 1550 mono temperature refrigeration units, as well as a dual view trailer bulkhead-mounted digital temperature display.

Each of the new trailers has been supplied on a full maintenance contract and is expected to be in service for at least five years. They will carry The Ice Co's livery with a range of three new slogans: 'Cooler Than A Cucumber', 'Cooler Than A North Pole Dance' and 'Cooler Than The Tip Of The Iceberg'.
