Schmitz hits the half million mark for axles08 April 2014

Schmitz Cargobull's in-house axle production has achieved a 10-year milestone, with the 500,000th axle being completed since production began in 2004.

The achievement, says the company, demonstrates how quickly its Rotos running gear with the Schmitz Cargobull axle has been accepted by the transport industry.

Schmitz Cargobull makes the point that running gear has a significant impact on maintenance costs and fleet uptime, so the company has developed its axles to ensure optimum tracking and suspension comfort, combined with the safety features offered by driving stability and braking programmes.

Axle production takes place at the firm's factory in Altenberge, Germany, alongside the manufacturing of its curtainsider and platform trailers. It also supplies axles to the company's three other German plants, as well as to its factories in Panevežys, Lithuania, and Zaragossa, Spain.

Currently, 80% of all trailers built by Schmitz Cargobull are equipped with its own axles – rising to 90% for trailers manufactured in Altenberge. Production capacity has levelled off at approximately 150,000 units a year.

The company's standard axle with a 22.5-inch disc brake has been joined by a Mega axle with a 19.5-inch disc brake and, most recently, a self-steering axle.
