Schmitz remains the cool choice for owner-driver19 May 2014

Owner-driver Kevin Brown has taken delivery of an S.KO Cool FP45 reefer, the third new trailer he has acquired from Schmitz Cargobull.

Grimsby-based Brown bought his first used reefer from Schmitz Cargobull 25 years ago, before moving on to new trailers in 1998. His latest tri-axle model features Rotos running gear and will be used to transport frozen vegetables, fish and ready meals to distribution centres in mainland Europe.

Reliability and quality are the two key criteria for sticking with Schmitz, says Brown. "The residual value remains high as they are a trusted name across Europe, so it's easy for me to sell on my trailer and replace it approximately every five years."

His last reefer, in operation for five and a half years, still has all original parts, with the exception of the brake pads, which were finally replaced a few months before its service ended.

The trailer's chassis is bolted and galvanised, so that parts can be fixed without the need for welding and painting. Bodywork comprises individual panels, meaning factory-quality repairs can be made to damaged sections without replacing the whole side of the trailer.

Brown drives a Scania 164 480bhp tractor unit, clocking up around 130,000km each year.
