SDC selects Edbro for new smoothside panel tipper 23 February 2011

SDC Trailers says it chose Edbro's tipping hoists for its latest fuel efficient smoothside tipper design, because of their reliability and increased lift capacity.

Matt Kerrison, area sales manager for SDC points to Edbro's lightweight CS series, which, he says, increase available payloads, making it an ideal fitment.

"We chose Edbro for tipping gear for a number of major reasons," says Kerrison. "First, Edbro products are manufactured in the UK, and are available on short lead times. Second, they don't go wrong, providing the extended reliability that is crucial in the field. Third, the light weight design fits well with our fuel-saving aluminium smooth sided tipper design."

Kerrison makes the point that smoothsiders are used for transporting less aggressive loads, and that the added incline in the chassis and body floor makes them easier to tip and ensures that the entire load is emptied smoothly.

But the design also reduces wind resistance, and hence also fuel consumption. SDC's latest design takes that further by using a new wider design of light weight aluminium extruded side panels to further reduce drag but also weight.

Edbro's contribution to weight reduction comes from the design of its compact, one-piece cylinder construction, which is laser welded to ensure the tube's all-important concentricity and weld quality.

The firm explains that this maximises cylinder strength at the top of each extended stage, to resist side loads induced by the body during tipping. It also provides maximum cylinder stiffness at full extension. Hence the increased lift capacity and weight saving, claimed to be up to 20%.
