Shell offers solution for French Ecotax payment 05 September 2013

Shell says it will provide fleet drivers with two on-board electronic payment solutions for the upcoming Ecotax in France, in a bid to cater to the needs of both frequent and occasional travellers through the country.

The green taxation system – formerly planned to come into effect on 1 October 2013, but now delayed by the French government to 1 January 2014 – needs to be collected using an on-board electronic unit.

It is part of the Grenelle Environment law affecting all HGVs weighing more than 3.5 tonnes driving in France, when using 10,000km of regional roads and highways (excluding tolled motorways) and 5,000km of local roads.

For frequent travellers, Shell offers InterRoute Plus, a post-paid electronic device that calculates Ecotax and motorway tolls in France, as well as Spain, Portugal (as of Q4 2013), and the Liefkenshoek tunnel in Belgium.

All transactions will come through to a single source. euroShell card customers will be able to see all toll and tax due amounts on their usual euroShell card invoices.

By using the post-payment method customers will also receive a 10% rebate provided by the French government (fixed by Ministerial Decree).

Meanwhile, occasional travellers will be able to use a prepaid Ecomouv on-board unit that can be collected from Ecomouv distribution points at 56 Shell sites in France and on the neighbouring boarders.

By providing the necessary legal documents and deposit, road transport fleet drivers will get the device installed with the required money pre-loaded. Payment for the device can be made using the euroShell card.

"Our priority at Shell is to deliver road transport fleet operators with solutions that offer convenience, control, security and savings," comments Andreas Grobler, partners manager.

"By providing two payment options for Ecotax, which are both compatible with the secure euroShell card, our customers can benefit from these attributes in a quick and easy fashion."

The costs applied to Ecotax will be calculated according to the specifications of the heavy goods vehicles (axles, euro class, weight), and the number of kilometers driven on the taxed roads. The estimated cost of the tax should average 12 cents per kilometre.
