Shred-it boosts business with Trimble technology 16 September 2013

Since deploying Trimble's fleet management technology, real-time visibility of secure document and paper shredding firm Shred-it's vehicles has helped the firm to improve work allocation and driver performance.

John Gavin, UK operations support, project and standards lead at Shred-it, explains that Trimble's GeoManager Fleet Management and Driver Safety solutions were deployed across its UK fleet of 108 vehicles.

The technologies were rolled out as part of the Zurich Fleet Intelligence programme, which combines telematics with reporting, driver development tools and support from Zurich's risk engineering and underwriting experts.

"We considered a number of providers ... but working with Trimble was the natural first choice," states Gavin.

"Not only were they recommended as part of the Zurich Fleet Intelligence programme, but they also provided the most comprehensive and cost-effective solution for vehicle management and managing driving behaviour," he explains.

Gavin states that audits are now run daily on vehicles to compare driver logs, so providing a productivity check. Shred-it can also pick up on vehicles being under-utilised, further increasing efficiency, and leading, he says, to an 8% growth in the business, without introducing additional vehicles or people.

As well as the fleet management improvements, Trimble vehicle diagnostics tools have also helped to lower the risk of mechanical failure by identifying potential faults before they occurs.

Further, getting real-time data on fuel consumption has assisted in identifying where fuel was being wasted on poorly performing vehicles.

And Gavin also says that Trimble's driver safety system has resulted in fewer accidents and reduced liability, "so helping to manage the risks and costs associated with work-related driving".

Says Gavin: "We were particularly impressed by the driver safety in-vehicle hardware that alerts drivers to behaviours outside set guidelines.

"They are provided with real-time feedback about their driving behaviour so they can make immediate changes to their driving style. This has proven beneficial to ... mitigating fleet safety risks and we have seen a difference in that our drivers have slowed down ... and we have seen an increase in driver score."
