S&J Pierce races into contention with Used Volvo FH tractors26 October 2016

S&J Pierce Transport has acquired ten Volvo FH tractors through Volvo Approved Used Trucks in the past 18 months – and its latest vehicle comes with a racing pedigree, as it was formerly the 2015 transporter for a British Superbike team.

Equipped with a Globetrotter XL cab, air-suspended leather seats, microwave and fridge and featuring the 500hp, Volvo 13-litre engine, the Leighton Buzzard-based operator’s latest, top-spec Used 4x2 FH tractor came with just 16,000km on the odometer.

The vehicle is still working in racing, but of an entirely different kind – S&J Pierce has a contract with the National Flying Club, collecting racing pigeons across the UK and transporting them to France for release.

Partner Steve Pierce says: “Because of our European coverage the trucks average in the region of 150,000km per annum, so reliability is key.

“I’ve now run trucks for 31 years and, in my opinion, Volvo are the most reliable trucks on the market. We even have a couple of old Volvos that have covered over two million kilometres each. They just keep going.”

Pierce adds that the drivers rate the FH, particularly the I-Shift automated transmission.

As with all of the operator’s 45-strong fleet, the latest vehicle has been fitted with a Kelsa high bar, roof-mounted air horns and Alcoa Durabright alloy wheels. “Nice, smart trucks are important when it comes to our company image and reputation, and with regards to driver recruitment and retention,” says Pierce.
