Smith Construction cuts idling and fuel with Masternaut 20 February 2015

Smith Construction Group says it has cut its annual fuel bill by 15% since installing Masternaut telematics across its 60 strong fleet of HGVs, including tippers and skip loaders.

The firm's Paul Usher explains that Smith Construction, which includes the skip hire arm Smith Recycling, now gets detailed reports on every job done by a vehicle, with mpg readings, carbon emissions and idling times.

This information alone has helped reduce vehicle idling by 87%, hence contributing hugely to the fuel cost savings while also helping to reduce its impact on the environment.

Usher also says the tracking technology has been used on insurance claims from third parties, to prove that the vehicle was nowhere near an incident, and adds that it's a useful contributor to customer service.

"It's important for us to have complete control over project schedules, so having the Masternaut system has enabled us to give customer accurate details on arrival times for skip jobs, which has made a real difference," explains Usher.

"Not only can we give customers much more information on when a job can be done, but we've got the added security if there's ever a dispute," he continues.

"We're working with Masternaut to see what else we can do with the technology and hope to implement the data into HR systems in the future."
