Steinhoff sleeps easy with Montracon aerodynamic trailers 19 July 2016

Steinhoff UK Bedding Group has taken delivery of 28 Montracon aerodynamic semi-trailers as part of a bid to improve fuel economy by up to 10%.

The trailers – which feature rear sloping roofs to reduce drag by directing air flow behind the trailer doors – have been matched to Mercedes-Benz Actros Stream Space tractor units, again selected in part for their aerodynamic shape.

All are high-volume trailers: 16 are 13.6m long, 85m3 capacity tandem-axle units; and the other 12 are 11m, 60m3 capacity, steered single axle urban trailers.

The tandem-axle semi-trailers are being used to move mattresses, divans and headboards for brands such as Dunlopillo, Myer’s, Slumberland and Staples from factories to distribution centres.

The single-axle urban trailers are replacements for rigid/drawbar units used to handle onward movement to retail outlets.

This is the second tranche of Montracon trailers – 10 were delivered in 2014 – marks Steinhoff UK’s second step in moving from leasing to outright purchase of its trailer fleet.

Steinhoff UK Bedding Group logistics manager Laurie Farley says that trailers will be kept for up to 15years, with refurbishment expected at around year seven.
