TfL and Navevo launch world’s first sat-nav-based HGV cyclist alert 19 April 2013

Sat-nav specialist Navevo, in association with Transport For London, has unveiled a world first in its ProNav HGV Cyclist Alert.

Supplied as standard on the new ProNav PNN420 sat nav for HGV drivers, and soon to be rolled out across all ProNav systems, this safety feature includes junction alerts at high convergence areas of HGVs and cyclists.

Navevo CEO Nick Caesari explains that the ProNav's HGV Cyclist Alert is designed to notify HGV drivers of high cyclist density areas and prompt them to take extra care.

"A navigation system is something a driver is likely to be listening to as he or she approachwa a junction and so it makes perfect sense to also alert them to the risk of cyclists," states Caesari.

In operation, a warning symbol is displayed on the navigation system's mapping that projects a 50m radius warning zone around each HGV/cyclist convergence area. Drivers are also provided with a short audible tone as a reminder.

The HGV Cyclist Alert software uses data provided by TfL and the most up to date DfT (Department for Transport) HGV and cycle flow figures for London's road network. The dataset uses this information to identify locations where large numbers of HGVs and cyclists converge.

Initially, 100 high convergence areas across London have been included, as alerts at every junction would be counterproductive.

Working with other local authorities both in London and nationally, Navevo plans to increase the level of coverage and will provide free updates when new data becomes available.

Other features of the new PNN420 system include a London Freight Pack, which is compatible with TfL's Freight Journey Planner. This allows users to plan a route on TfL's website before connecting their ProNav to a computer and downloading the TfL route direct to their navigation system.

Using Navevo's Line of Route (LoR) technology, the navigation system then follows the TfL route exactly as planned, providing the driver with turn-by-turn instructions and getting him or her quickly back to the original route, if they stray off course.

As part of the pack, PNN420 also includes over 1,200 'premium transport data' points, detailing height, weight and width restrictions for London, alongside London loading bays and Red Route bays to help speed up the delivery process.
