TfL Direct Vision Safe System retrofit launched by SmartWitness08 June 2020

SmartWitness has launched a multi-camera safety compliance package for Transport for London’s DVS measures that will come into force for HGVs in March 2021.

The SmartWitness Driver Vehicle Safety (DVS) Safe System is a multi-camera package to meet the terms of the Safe System retrofit option for truck models that do not meet minimum DVS design criteria on their own. The new TfL rules legislation states that vehicles with poor direct vision, and most HGVs fall into this category, should have indirect vision hardware fitted after the point of manufacture.

It combines the latest multi-camera recorder (CP4S), with an updated forward-facing connected camera (CP2 LTE), 120° HD side view/rear-view camera, and a 7-inch dash-mounted LCD monitor (SV7LCD-2) to provide the driver with a live 360° view around the vehicle.

The system can also include proximity sensors on the near side that issues alerts to the driver of other road users and also send out audible alerts to other road users when the vehicle is turning left. The SmartWitness DVS System comes in a four channel (CP4S) or eight channel version (CRXS), which adds the option of four more cameras or other connected IoT devices.

The SmartWitness DVS Safe System has already been installed and trialled in the 75 heavy goods vehicles operated by McGregor Logistics in Doncaster.
