Tiling firm sticks to Fuso Canter – goes dual-clutch23 January 2015

Northamptonshire-based Walls and Floors has replaced its previous fleet of 7.5-tonne Fuso Canters with eight new, Euro 6-engined versions of the same, range-topping light truck.

The Kettering company's latest Canter 7C18s were supplied by Wellingborough Mercedes-Benz Dealer Intercounty Truck & Van and have been fitted with low-height curtainside bodies by Kurt Hobbs Coachworks, of nearby Great Addington.

Each is powered by a 175bhp engine and drive through the Canter's fully automated Duonic dual-clutch transmissions, for smooth, fuel-efficient gear changes. They also have the standard Eco mode.

Like their predecessors, these trucks so offer an impressive payload in line with the their requirement to move heavy ceramic and porcelain tiles.

Most can carry in excess of 3,750kg, the only exceptions being two equipped with 1,000kg Anteo tuckaway tail-lifts weighing in at around 250kg.

"While these trucks will do some deliveries to building sites, where the customer will insist on a tail-lift, they're primarily used for multi-drop domestic orders," explains operations director John Steel.

And he adds that, while the trucks' payload is key to their appeal for his operation, size is also important.

"The Canter has a relatively compact footprint for a 7.5-tonner, which allows the vehicle to access tight locations and makes it very manoeuvrable," he comments. "This is a big advantage given that we make the majority of our deliveries to London," he says.

Steel also likes the new Fuso Canter's uprated rear suspension.
