Transam Trucking makes headline savings with brake tester05 March 2020

East Anglian transport operator Transam Trucking has reduced brake testing time for its 130-strong fleet by 75%, thanks to a brake tester installation from Totalkare.

The operator transports music and stage equipment for global stars, including Elton John, Jess Glynne and the cast of Strictly Come Dancing, and wanted a solution to reduce the time-consuming task of loading vehicles for tests.

After evaluating the market, Transam Trucking chose Totalkare to fit an in-ground brake tester with automatic load simulation. It required some civils work, but not the usual deep pit, according to the supplier.

The workshop can now test each vehicle at full load capacity in 15 minutes, instead of the hour it took previously. Transam’s unit can test up to 16 tonnes per axle.

“Regulation is coming in that will require you to ensure that every vehicle you put on the brake tester has a full load on it, which will be very time intensive when you’ve got 600 tests to do a year,” says Mike Wickham, Transam’s workshop manager.

“It has only been in a few months, but the difference is already huge, with the capacity to test 20 vehicles – ranging in size from a Sprinter van to a 53ft arctic – every day.”

Totalkare launched its mobile and in-ground brake testers last year. All options are hot galvanised for durability and controlled by app technology so that data collection and analysis can be performed on a smartphone or tablet.
