Trojan’s telematics cuts fuel costs by 24 per cent 18 June 2015

Smart meter installation and maintenance specialist Trojan Utilities is reporting fuel consumption down 24% since going live with a telematics system from Masternaut.

Trojan Utilities operations director Gemma Openshaw says the telematics runs across its 100-plus strong fleet of vans, and adds that the system is now used by several departments across the business.

"Masternaut ... is used every day and we can't operate without it," states Openshaw.

"Without Masternaut, our fuel bill would be much higher so the system is effectively paying for itself," she continues.

"As a business, we're operating in a challenging sector and the system has helped us cope with the rigours of installing in excess of 2,500 meters per week," she adds.

The Masternaut system provides Trojan with in-depth driver behaviour monitoring, looking at speeding, mileage and harsh events, and helping Trojan to see the impact various strategies have on fuel usage.

It is also used to despatch engineers to proactively plan jobs and reactive emergency installs.

Openshaw says the two-way messaging allows engineers and Trojan to import contact numbers and communicate while out in the field, too.

She says the reduction in fuel usage is partly a result of improved dynamic vehicle scheduling and partly better driver behaviour.

Looking at the latter, Openshaw says there has been a staggering 97% reduction in instances of speeding.
