Tyre pressure and telematics tie-up24 March 2016

Tyre manufacturer Continental has announced a tie-up with telematics business LostNFound, in a deal which sees the ContiPressureCheck tyre pressure monitoring system integrated into the telematics software.

Dubbed ‘ConnectedTyre’, the new functionality means that tyre pressure and temperature data collected in real time by ContiPressureCheck is shown on the LostNFound user interface, and can be delivered to mobile devices.

According to Hartwig Kühn, Continental’s ContiPressureCheck manager, the integration with the telematics system “allows us to make the process of checking the tyre pressure transparent for drivers and fleet managers, and simplifies the technical monitoring of the tyres”.

He adds: “If the measured value deviates from the specified value, the system immediately sends a warning via email or text message, so that measures to resolve the problem and restore the correct tyre pressure can be taken promptly. This helps to avoid costs and time-consuming breakdowns.”

During trials on a test track, says Kühn, a reduction of 2bar in tyre pressure led to an increase of 0.7 litres of fuel use over 100km. He believes many trucks are operating with tyres that are 12% below the optimum level.
