UK’s first hydrogen fuelling station launched at Millbrook 11 September 2012

Millbrook, the Bedfordshire-based vehicle proving ground has partnered with Air Products to launch the UK's first commercially available hydrogen fuelling station at an automotive engineering and test facility.

The SmartFuel station was opened by the newly appointed Minister of State for Business and Enterprise, Michael Fallon MP, who also provided the keynote speech at last week's (5—6 September 2012) LCV2012 low carbon vehicle exhibition and conference.

The new facility represents a step forward for the development of a hydrogen infrastructure, designed to cut carbon emissions from transport, and Millbrook's duel pressure fuelling capability (350 and 700 bar) allows it to power state-of-the-art fuel cell vehicles that store hydrogen at higher pressures.

Millbrook also demonstrated its expertise in optimising fuel and energy consumption at this year's LCV event, and ran a competition for visitors to drive a range of vehicles with petrol, diesel and electric drivelines around its test tracks.

Each vehicle was fitted with data logging instrumentation to measure fuel/energy consumption and the most economical driver was awarded the coveted Millbrook trophy at the end of the two-day event.

Says Miguel Fragoso, managing director of Millbrook Proving Ground: "We are delighted to have worked with Cenex on the most successful LCV event yet.

"The event brings together automotive and low carbon experts from around the world, and, with an increasing focus on the UK low carbon vehicle sector this year, proved to be the highest profile low carbon vehicle event to date."
