Van and truck sales hit five-year high07 January 2014

Commercial vehicle registrations in the UK leapt 14.7% in 2013 to more than 327,000 units – the highest figure since 2008.

According to data released today (7 January 2014) by the SMMT (Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders), van sales were up by more than 13% year-on-year, boosted by 32% growth in the final month.

Truck manufacturers also notched up more than 56,000 unit sales during the year, an increase of 23% on 2012, also boosted by strong sales at the end of 2013 on the run up to more costly Euro 6 engined vehicles.

"The introduction of new Euro 6 trucks will be of key interest to the heavy end of the market in 2014, while we expect the forthcoming launches of several new light commercial vans to deliver further growth in this important sector," says Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive.

December sales were markedly improved on the same month the previous year. As well as a 32% boost for van sales, registrations of new rigids were up by 293% on December 2012, with artics up by 137%.
