Viamaster selects SAF self-steer for first longer semi-trailers 10 February 2015

Partnerlink member Viamaster has acquired two longer semi-trailers (LSTs), each specified with the new SAF self-steer rear axle system, supplied by UK and Ireland distributor IMS.

The 15.65 metre double-decker step-frame LSTs are 4.875 metres high, and have 19.5-inch single wheels and SAF drum brakes.

"With SAF self-steer axles we will save on maintenance, reduce our running costs and achieve a greater turning circle when collecting or unloading goods," states Ian Davenport, fleet manager at Viamaster Transport.

"We have been using SAF running gear for over 13 years and find the products very reliable, with no issues," he continues.

"Some of our trailers are approaching 10 years old, which shows the long life."

SAF wide-angle, self-steer axles come as standard with 30 degree steer and are claimed to offer the widest steering angle currently available as standard.

The company states that they beat others offering the minimum 27 degrees (to achieve certification), since they do not compromise tyres, chassis or suspension components, in terms of wear, particularly when an LST is turned tighter than the inner radius of the turning circle.

IMS is providing Viamaster with technical training for its technicians.
