Volvo electric-hybrid buses slash emissions in Stockholm 17 March 2015

Eight electric-hybrid Volvo 7900 buses was deployed yesterday (16 March 2015) on a bus route that runs through the centre of Stockholm, Sweden.

The electric hybrid buses have now replaced all of the existing buses on the route, bringing quiet, fuel-efficient and practically emission-free transport to the city.

"More and more cities now regard electrified bus traffic as a cost-efficient way of reducing the problems of poor air quality and noise," states Volvo Buses' president Håkan Agnevall.

"Our solution makes travel more attractive and improves the environment without the need for large investments in new infrastructure," he adds.

Agnevall exllains that Volvo's electric-hybrid buses will operate quietly and emissions-free, using renewable electricity for seven of the route's eight kilometres.

Their down-sized diesel engines, driven on biodiesel, will then take over. The buses' batteries will be rapid-charged for just six minutes at the end stops, and

Volvo says total energy consumption is 60% lower than that of conventional buses, while green emissions are down by 90%.

Volvo's electric-hybrid buses have been used in commercial service in Hamburg, Germany, since December 2014.
