Volvo FH brings fresh approach to safety for distribution firm27 January 2015

Temperature-controlled distribution business Freshlinc has taken delivery of its first Volvo trucks – 25 FH 6x2 tractor units.

Supplied by dealer Crossroads Truck and Bus of Rotherham, the Globetrotter-cabbed Volvo FH trucks were specified with a range of safety options, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, emergency brake and lane-departure warning support, all of which are part of Volvo's 'active safety' package.

All the vehicles are FH-500s, with Volvo's 13-litre D500K engine rated at 500bhp and mated to the I-Shift automated transmission.

Spalding-based Freshlinc says it evaluated demonstrator trucks from several truck manufacturers before reaching its decision.

Freshlinc fleet engineer Andy Marchant says the company scored each on driver feedback, fuel efficiency, residual values and dealer support.

Marchant describes the Volvo FH as "a driver's truck", and says every driver now has to undergo a rigorous assessment to meet strict safety standards.

"Our drivers appreciate the additional safety features on the new Volvos," he states.

"Crossroads is also assisting Freshlinc by providing us with an ongoing 'train the trainer' driver training programme to help our drivers get the best out of the trucks."
