Volvo launches first dual clutch transmission for heavy trucks18 June 2014

Volvo Trucks has announced the launch of I-Shift Dual Clutch, the first automated transmission for heavy vehicles with a dual clutch system.

Dual clutch transmissions are already used in performance cars, but Volvo is the first manufacturer to offer a similar solution for heavy vehicles. It will be available on selected FH trucks later this year.

Being a dual clutch, torque is maintained without any interruption to power delivery, so the vehicle doesn't lose speed during gear changes.

I-Shift Dual Clutch has two input shafts and two clutches, so that two gears can be selected at the same time – and the clutch determines which is active.

The new system is based on Volvo's existing I-Shift, but the front half of the gearbox has been completely redesigned. It is particularly beneficial, says Volvo, in situations requiring many gear changes, such as hilly terrain, windy roads, or urban operations.

"When driving, it feels like you have access to two gearboxes," comments Astrid Drewsen, Volvo's product manager for drivelines.

"When one gear is selected in one gearbox, the next gear is already prepared in the other."

I-Shift Dual Clutch will be available from autumn 2014 for the Volvo FH with Euro 6 D13 engines in the 460, 500 or 540bhp configurations.
