Volvo Trucks gears up for 1,800 more trucks to DHL21 January 2010

Volvo Trucks says it is looking forward to delivering up to 1,800 trucks over the next two years to Deutsche Post DHL, following signing of a frame agreement.

Staffan Jufors, president and CEO of Volvo Trucks, explains that Volvo Trucks is now the preferred supplier of heavy trucks to Deutsche Post DHL's fleets in Sweden, Finland and the UK, on operations offering express, freight and supply chain services.

Says Hugo Eckseler, chief procurement officer at Deutsche Post DHL: "Modernising our fleet is an important part of our GoGreen climate protection programme. The purchase of the new vehicles will further support us in our efforts to act in an environmentally responsible way."

Deutsche Post DHL launched its GoGreen climate programme in 2008, with a stated objective of reducing carbon emissions for every letter or parcel carried and every tonne of cargo transported plus a 30% reduction of every square metre of warehouse space used by 2020.

Eckseler explains that part of that will be achieved by gradually replacing the organisation's air and ground fleets, working on projects for alternative vehicles and also training its drivers in fuel-efficient driving.

Jufors says that Volvo Trucks aims to take the lead in achieving carbon-neutral transportation, reducing dependence from fossil fuels.

He makes the point that, in 2007 the company showed that it has the alternative fuel engine technologies required by demonstrating seven drivable trucks each tailored to run on a different renewable fuel and this year field tests will begin with selected renewable fuels.

The company has also developed a parallel hybrid truck said to offer fuel savings of up to 30%. Series production is planned to start in 2012.
