Volvo unveils new platform for long-distance coaches24 September 2018

Volvo is exhibiting its new platform for long-distance coaches at the IAA Commercial Vehicles show in Hanover (20-27 September).

First announced earlier this year, the range encompasses two models, the 9900 and the 9700, and is the manufacturer’s “biggest investment in this segment for more than 20 years”, according to Håkan Agnevall, president of Volvo Buses.

On the luxury version, the 9900 (pictured), new ‘Z-shaped’ windows combine with a sloping ‘theatre floor’, described as “a new design language for coaches”.

With improved aerodynamics and lighter weight, both buses can cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 4%, according to Volvo. This figure can be improved, it adds, with features such as Dynamic Chassis Lowering and Volvo I-See, which changes gears according to the upcoming topography.

“With our all-new, modern coaches and flexible service packages, we have a highly competitive holistic offer to the market. Put simply, we make it easier for our customers to offer first-class service and to make money,” added Agnevall.

The driver’s area features a new steering wheel and instrumentation, and the vehicle has a lower centre of gravity for improved stability and manoeuvrability.

Both the Volvo 9700 and the Volvo 9900 are equipped with technology for active and passive safety, including more robust front impact protection (FIP) and a Driver Alert system that monitors the vehicle’s movements and issues alerts if the driver is tired or not concentrating on the road.

The 9900 has an extra-high floor level and large glass panels to the front and sides. The interior roof is 8cm higher and a straighter transition between walls and roof gives a greater feeling of space.

The 9700 is available with a variety of equipment alternatives for medium range or premium tour and charter operations.
