VOSA highlights testing directive changes 28 July 2011

Operators and fleet managers need to be aware of changes to the Testing Directive, which comes into effect on 1 January 2012, according to VOSA, which wants to ensure a smooth transition for commercial vehicles.

The new directive, 2010/48/EU, features a number of alterations to vehicle testing, specifically in relation to brakes, steering and suspension systems and lighting.

Other HGV and PSV parts that are subject to revisions in test procedures include registration plates, seat belts, fuel tanks and electrical wiring.

VOSA's head of large vehicle policy Andy Cattell states: "We have participated in manufacturer forums and industry events for the past 12 months, but we will continue to try and raise people's awareness up to the introduction of the directive."

Cattell adds that, despite the introduction of the directive in January, he has managed to secure a familiarisation period for operators.

"The manuals will be in place on 1 January 2012, and the testing will be done, but no fines will be issues for three months," he states.
