West Midlands Ambulance Service extends Fiat Ducato fleet with 101-strong order23 February 2015

West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) has taken delivery of the first 40 vehicles from a 101-strong order from Fiat for frontline ambulances built around the Ducato Maxi van.

Based on long wheelbase, extra-high roof, long-bodied Ducato Maxis, the ambulances are powered by 180bhp 3-litre MultiJet Power engines and have a gvw of 4,250kg. They have also been fitted with high output alternators to boost the electrical load required.

Conversion was carried out by O&H Vehicle Conversions, with each taking 400 man-hours to complete.

A special rear suspension was fitted and the vehicle is kitted out with bespoke storage for the medical equipment, with approximately one mile of electrical wiring to power the onboard equipment.

The final five vehicles in the order will also be fitted with trial solar panels to boost battery charging.

Once the order is complete, 240 of WMAS's 360-strong ambulance fleet will be Fiat Ducato vehicles.
