The restricted access height of 4,650mm in the Dublin Tunnel meant that double-deck fridge trailers could not be used as they are usually 4,880mm high, so Culina approached Cartwright for a solution.
The trailer manufacturer designed the unit at the lower height, without compromising the 1,830mm cage height requirement for each deck.
The trailer is improving fuel economy by around 4%, with Culina undertaking road tests to calculate the precise improvement.
It also means there is less damage from trees and, if motorway diversions are in place, from low bridges.
Furthermore, the weight of the trailer has been greatly reduced, increasing its payload.
Culina expects to roll the new design out to its entire fleet across the UK.
Cartwright Rentals has also added five of the new trailers to its rental fleet.
