Maritime Transport returns to Scania with 200-vehicle order

Multi-modal logistics business Maritime Transport has ordered 200 Scania R450 tractors – its largest ever single order with one manufacturer – after trialling five of the vehicles for a year and reaping the rewards with improved fuel efficiency.

Supplied by dealer TruckEast of Stowmarket, several of the new vehicles have already gone into operation across Felixstowe-based Maritime’s UK sites.

Maritime has specified the new trucks with an R Highline cab variant. The 450bhp six-cylinder engines are paired with the two-pedal Opticruise transmission and deliver 2,350Nm torque with full SCR technology.

Stuart Wardlaw, Maritime’s fleet director, says: “Our work can be so varied that usually comparing a vehicle’s mpg performance to another is difficult. To allow us to make an informed decision, we undertook a track trial with the latest products across our fleet... When it came to fuel economy, the Scanias outperformed the other marque.”

He adds: “This, alongside all other factors of the whole life cost of the vehicles, was the deciding factor when placing our order for the 200 Scania R-Series.”

The high-spec R cabs provide a comfortable working and living space for drivers – important, says Wardlaw, not only for driver retention but also their performance: “When they are happy with the vehicle they are driving, we believe they will drive more economically and safely.”
