4x4 Fuso Canter is clear choice for Banbury council 20 January 2014

Banbury Council has bought a specially equipped 4x4 Fuso Canter to keep the roads clear of ice and snow during the winter, should the need arise. .

Supplied by Mercedes-Benz dealer Euro Commercials (South Wales), the 6.5-tonne Canter 6C18 has a demountable snowplough blade and gritting hopper/spreader, manufactured by US specialist Meyer.

It has also been fitted with a Neath Coachbuilders dropside body and a 5-tonne/metre Hiab XS 055 crane to enable it to lift 1-tonne bags of grit.

The Canter has a 175bhp engine and five-speed manual gearbox, with dashboard-mounted shift lever for cross-cab access. Drive to the front axle can be selected or disengaged on the move.

The 4x4 chassis is higher than standard Canters but in standard, compact cab-over-engine format and, in this case, with a three-seat Comfort cab.

"The truck's all-wheel drive capability means it will still be able to get around on snow and ice," comments Mike Hall, Banbury's recreation and amenities manager.

"It can also access small, residential roads to deliver bags of grit and, when fitted with its demountable plough blade and hopper, undertake snow clearing and gritting operations."
