Axtec Dynamic Axle Weighbridges Axtec’s dynamic weighbridge is said to allow a six-axle tractor and trailer combination

Axtec has installed two Dynamic Axle Weighbridges following a contract in which Rig Construction was appointed to refurbish Wiltshire Council’s depots in Warminster and Chippenham.

Part of the installation groundworks and the laying of flat slabs to tolerance levels, in sympathy with and as determined by the existing yard levels.

Axtec’s dynamic weighbridge is said to allow a six-axle tractor and trailer combination, for example, to provide a complete vehicle in just 40-second and to obtain individual axle and a gross vehicle weight to an accuracy of +/- 0.25%. The motorist drives over the flush mounted platform at a speed of 2.5 mph before obtaining instant weight figures from a digital read-out.

With accurate and rapid vehicle weighing a prerequisite for Wiltshire Council, its gritting vehicles are weighed before departure and upon return to ensure compliance with the Road Vehicles (Authorised Weight) Legislation, and to determine salt quantities according to specific routes. Refurbishment of both salt depots consist of new salt barns, vehicle workshops and storage, offices and welfare spaces as well as re-routing traffic to improve safety and efficiency.

At both sites, key-fobs are used to automatically enter the vehicle fleet number, further speeding up vehicle throughput, eliminating potential driver error and adding to site safety. Meanwhile, large remote displays are positioned to provide the driver with axle and gross vehicle loads as they pass over the Axtec weighbridge. Weight tickets are printed on demand and relevant data is stored for future scrutiny.

Simon Rowe MBE, operations resilience manager at Wiltshire Council, said: “We’ve been working with Rigg and Axtec on our new depot projects across the county and we’ve built an excellent relationship with both companies. The product and communications are excellent, and the solutions are always tailored to the site and the application. We now have a single weighbridge supplier across all of our sites, meaning that our drivers are familiar with the equipment and the operation.”
