Buy-back campaign eases debt for closed transport firms 26 May 2010

Recovery truck bodies builder Roger Dyson has bought back several vehicles from two transport companies that had ceased trading.

Gloucestershire firm Taylers of Woodford and St Helen's-based Bob Rome & Sons are the sadly failed companies – both former customers of Dyson and each apparently delighted not only with the prices they achieved, but also the speed with which he responded.

Andrew Tayler, managing director of Taylers, says he had feared that, as guarantors, he and his mother would owe money on seven of their 15-strong fleet of vehicles, many fitted with Roger Dyson bodies.

These included a pair of heavy recovery trucks on Volvo chassis and a Volvo tractor unit and low-loader trailer, as well as various Hydraloader slidebacks and a 7.5-tonner with spectacle lift.

"I rang Roger to see if there was anything he could do," recalls Tayler. "That was on a Friday. He rescheduled his plans for the weekend; came down to see us on the Saturday and by Tuesday had struck a deal with our finance company that's given us the clean break we wanted."

Steve Rome, whose company worked for many years under contract to Merseyside Police, has a similar story. After accident recovery work was allocated to the Highways Agency, and following a second arson attack on its premises, he decided to close down the firm.

Bob Rome & Sons ran seven recovery units – most conventional Hydraloader slidebacks (two with cranes), but also a John Deere tractor, used for recovering burnt out cars, and a pair of ageing but immaculate 4x4 Bedfords, both ex-army vehicles. Dyson bought them all.

"Roger came up to Liverpool within a couple of days of my call," comments Rome. "He knocked me down by a few quid but paid a fair price. And although the vehicles were all road legal, I didn't have to provide any guarantees or warranties."
