Red vans go green on ECO-Start technology at Parcelforce 02 March 2010

More than 1,000 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans fitted with ECO-Start technology have been ordered by Parcelforce Worldwide.

Parcelforce managing director David Smith says it's part of the delivery company's programme to improve its environmental credentials.

The 1,106 322CDI light commercial vehicles replace a large proportion of the current Parcelforce fleet, which is responsible for deliveries to 27 million addresses around the UK.

ECO-Start technology cuts off the engine after the vehicle is stationary for more than two seconds, before starting again when the clutch pedal is depressed. Smith says that the technology was one of the deciding factors in choosing Sprinter van – and adds that the company is looking for a fuel saving of around 5% from the previous vehicles on its fleet.

Says Smith: "We take our environmental and community responsibilities very seriously. We have a comprehensive programme of activities to reduce our impact on the environment and to invest in third-party environmental initiatives."
