Cummins completes Meritor acquisition26 August 2022

Commercial vehicle powertrain manufacturer Cummins has announced that it has completed its $3.7bn acquisition of Meritor, a global supplier of axle and brake technologies for commercial vehicle and industrial markets. The deal was originally announced in February 2022.

Cummins said: “The integration of Meritor’s people, products and capabilities in axle and brake technology will position Cummins as a leading provider of integrated powertrain solutions across internal combustion and electric power applications.

In February, Cummins said: “This is the right time to pursue this combination as demand for decarbonized solutions accelerates. Cummins believes eAxles will be a critical integration point within hybrid and electric drivetrains. By accelerating Meritor’s investment in electrification and integrating development within its New Power business, Cummins expects to deliver market-leading solutions to global customers.

It added: “The acquisition of Meritor also adds products to Cummins’ components business that present attractive growth opportunities across the company’s range of power solutions and applications. Cummins expects to utilize its global footprint to accelerate the growth of these core axle and brake businesses by serving commercial truck, trailer, off-highway, defence, specialty and aftermarket customers around the world.

Although the brand appears to be strongest in North America, Meritor operates its European aftermarket business out of a customer services centre in Redditch, and also operates a 330,000sq ft manufacturing site based in Wales, where it makes the ELSA line of air disc and drum brakes. Other sites in Europe include R&D in Cameri, Italy and manufacturing in Lindesberg, Sweden, Saint-Etienne and Venissieux, France, Steyr, Austria and Vrchlabi, Czech Republic.
