DAF trucks duo set to shine for Lantern Recovery 08 August 2012

Lantern Recovery Specialists has added a pair of DAF-based recovery vehicles to the fleet, as part of its 2012 expansion programme.

Supplied by Harris DAF of Grays, Essex, both vehicles – an XF105 and CF65 – were specified with bodywork and equipment built to the company's requirements by Worldwide Recovery Systems, of Caxton Hill, Hertfordshire.

Plated at 60 tonnes gvw, the FAS XF105 is a 5.3 metre wheelbase model with a lifting rear axle. Power comes from the Euro 5 compliant 12.9-litre MX engine, delivering 460bhp and matched to a 16-speed manual transmission with overdrive.

With a 45-tonne capacity, three-stage hydraulic top boom and twin 22.5-tonne winches with flip-over rear legs/spades, the XF105 will be able to handle any heavy recovery.

Its boom can be simultaneously extended and elevated to enable fast and accurate positioning for delicate winching and lifting operations.

Meanwhile, the accident recovery vehicle is based on a two-axle DAF CF65, plated at 18 tonnes. This vehicle is powered by the GR engine rated at 250bhp and has a six-speed manual gearbox. Its Space Cab is air conditioned, has a night heater, and skylights in the roofline.

A 7.93m Chevron 16 Series slide-bed of eight tonnes capacity, with a hydraulic winch, removable side rails and a two-tonne extendable second vehicle lift, were also all fitted by Worldwide Recovery Systems.

Use of aluminium for the bed, combined with a galvanised sub-frame, results in both low weight and increased durability. A radio-controlled Amco Veba 823 3S crane provides a lift capability of 1,890kg at its full extension of 10m.

The vehicles will be based at Lantern Recovery Specialists' rescue and logistics site at the South Mimms service centre on the M25.
