First new Volkswagen Crafter for animal charity21 August 2015

Animal charity the RSPCA has taken delivery of the first of six new Volkswagen Crafter vans, with bespoke conversions to enable the transport of animals in cages.

The short wheelbase CR30 2.0-litre TDI 136 PS BlueMotion Crafter vans have undergone specialist conversion, with adjustments including a fully-sealed loadspace with spray-on waterproof line, as well as ventilation units in the roof to deliver fresh air to the animals.

Each Crafter has been fitted with nine bespoke cages of varying sizes – the cages also have removable partitions between.

The vans are painted in the designs of schoolchildren who won a national competition.

The RSPCA's Matthew Cull says: "The impact this commitment from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will have on the day-to-day management of our core animal welfare activity is huge."
