Hewicks Haulage signs up to Mercedes Actros deal14 May 2010

Bury St Edmunds-based Hewicks Haulage has ordered a Mercedes-Benz 6x2 Actros 2546 with the flat-floored MegaSpace cab and 12-speed Mercedes Powershift automated transmission.

Hewicks runs 15 tractor units: this unit joins five more on ex-port trailer work, while the remainder haul bulk liquid animal feed in road tanks for sister company Cave Liquid Haulage.

"The Actros was excellent value for money," comments director Carl Brinkley. "The 'up front' price, combined with the guaranteed buy-back arrangement to which Orwell have committed themselves, added up to a highly competitive package," he adds.

Although he's not revealing the deal price, Brinkley does comment that Orwell also provided its demonstrator for two weeks to prove its credentials.

"I drove the Actros myself for most of that time and found it very easy. The auto 'box in particular is very smooth and user-friendly. The 460hp V6 performed strongly and, although we don't consider two weeks long enough for an accurate measure of fuel performance, it certainly seemed to do well compared to the rest of our fleet," says Brinkley.
