Hydrogen transport a BIG HIT in Orkney30 May 2018

Trailers from Spanish gas transport specialist Calvera Industrial Group have gone into operation as part of the BIG HIT project in the Orkney Islands.

BIG HIT – Building Innovative Green Hydrogen Systems in an Isolated Territory – is a pilot project and aims to set a blueprint for the use of hydrogen technology in isolated areas.

Calvera’s trailers are each carrying up to 250kg of hydrogen gas, which has been produced using renewable energy on the northern islands of Eday and Shapinsay.

This is transported to Kirkwall, on mainland Orkney, using the trailers and the ferry service.

The hydrogen is used in a 75kW fuel cell, which provides heat and electricity at the Kirkwall port. In addition, it will also be used for Orkney Council’s five Renault Symbio Kangoo vans.

The project has a €10.9 million budget, with €5 million coming from the European Commission through the Fuel Cells Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU).
