irtec in process of steep evolution 26 July 2010

A new proposed structure for the irtec licensing scheme has now been put out to consultation.

The move was taken to further strengthen irtec's aims to improve transport engineering competence and standards, following the joint arrangement entered into by IRTE and IMI earlier this year.

The proposal sees an extra level added to the structure – that of irtec inspection technician. To attain this licence, candidates will be required to complete online theory tests and a practical vehicle inspection test.

SOE head of operations and communications Ian Chisholm says: "We are very hopeful that this new structure will meet industry's requirements and expectations, and further enhance the level of quality of technicians in the industry.

"Both the IRTE and IMI believe that we can take irtec forward and look forward to further consultation on the proposed format."

The consultation period ends on 3 September 2010. To find out more about the proposed irtec structure and to forward your comments, visit www.irtec.org.uk.
