Logistics sector is boosted by apprenticeships 04 March 2013

A total of 15,670 logistics-based apprenticeships started in England in 2011—12, according to provisional figures from Skills for Logistics (SfL) – a 29% increase on the corresponding figure for 2010—11.

"This increase is great news for the Logistics Sector because it clearly demonstrates that we are successfully attracting greater numbers of younger people into our industry," reasons Dr Mick Jackson, CEO of Skills for Logistics.

More than 90% of the apprenticeship certificates are for driving goods vehicles, and warehousing and storage frameworks.

"By creating apprenticeships in close partnership with employers in the logistics industry we can ensure that that they are built around the high demand for the right kind of skills in the sector," states Jackson.

"To encourage more young people into apprenticeships, SfL is working with employers to look at 'traineeships', or 'pre-employment programmes', that will help bridge young people into the sector," he adds.
