Out-of-hours deliveries a must in the capital, says FTA 11 July 2013

Following publication of the Mayor's Road Task Force report yesterday (10 July 2013), by Boris Johnson, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) is calling for out-of-hours deliveries in the capital.

In its own publication 'Supporting economic growth in London – Efficient logistics', published today, FTA urges more flexibility from Transport for London and the boroughs to support an efficient logistics industry.

While FTA welcomes the overall findings, in terms of enabling people and vehicles to move more efficiently around London's roads, the association wants additional measures for freight and deliveries to be considered.

Natalie Chapman, FTA's head of policy for London says that the capital's roads need to be more efficient and flexible – specifically with quiet out-of-hours deliveries to ensure that increasing freight traffic is not forced into peak hours.

"Too many deliveries are forced into the morning peak, due to the constraints of night time delivery curfews," comments Chapman.

"We need to make better use of London's road space throughout the day and night. It is crucial that the boroughs work with industry to relax these restrictions," she continues.

"The time is right for a proper review of the London Lorry Control Scheme, which restricts the movement of lorries overnight."
