Scania-ADL gas-powered demonstrator bus nears completion 07 March 2013

A Scania gas-powered bus with ADL Enviro 300NG bodywork is due to embark on a series of demonstrations with high-profile UK bus operators any day now.

The demos are scheduled to begin in mid-March and Scania says they are in response to the interest generated by the announcement that Reading Buses is to become the first adopter of Scania-ADL gas-powered vehicles, with delivery of 20 units due to commence in May 2013.

The demonstrator gas-powered bus, which is Green Bus Funding compliant, has now completed homologation and certification tests.

Equipped with a Scania K UB 4x2 chassis with a 270bhp Scania OG9 G04 engine, the vehicle is capable of operating on either CNG (compressed natural gas) or BNG (bio natural gas).

Scania says the engine offers low fuel consumption with no need for EGR (exhaust gas recirculation). Also, it is based on the same platform as Scania's modular-build 9.3-litre diesel engine, which limits the number of new components required for the low-entry gas chassis to around just 40 items.

"The levels of interest in this new gas-powered product, developed by Scania and ADL are exceptional, with operators the length and breadth of the UK keen to try a vehicle for themselves," comments Scania director of bus, coach and engine sales Tony Tomsett.

And Robert Davey, group commercial director at ADL, adds: "We are delighted to be taking to the road with this exciting new initiative. It is clear that Reading's decision to buy 20 of the vehicles has stimulated a huge amount of interest, so the message to operators is clear: 'Get on board now if you want to feature in the demonstration programme.'"
