Snapshot of fleet risk from ProVision27 July 2018

Many fleets are failing to make use of technology such as vehicle cameras, according to a new study, which reveals that only 20% have cameras in all vehicles and, of those, more than four in ten (42%) rely on single dashcams, with no data analysis or reporting capability.

That’s according to ProVision CameraMatics, which analysed data collected over the four months to February 2018 from its Fleet Risk Assessment Tool – interactive survey software to help fleet operators to identify business risk exposure.

The data rates users based on the procedures and hardware they employ to minimise risk. The results showed more than six out of ten respondents had a risk score of 70% or higher.

Other findings included: 17% admitted failing to carry out critical compliance, such as walk-around checks; 15% had no accident reporting process; more than half (52%) have cameras that do not alert them to hardware failures; and 80% have no remote access to camera footage.

ProVision says the right combination of hardware and software can significantly reduce fleet risk.

“The results show that a surprising number of fleet operators are grossly unprepared and under-protected for incidents and accidents that may occur,” says Simon Murray, co-founder of ProVision.

“According to our findings, the majority of fleets with cameras have no mechanism to be made aware if a failure occurs in the hardware and have no access to the footage unless the vehicle returns to base and/or the media is physically removed.

“This is a major gap in a fleet’s risk management and could open a fleet up to a range of risk, simply because it does not have adequate reporting and monitoring technology in place.”
