Three operators embrace the cloud30 July 2018

News this month comes from three operators that are using mobile data and connected tablets to manage fleets, in slightly different ways.

First, mobile engineering firm Paul Clark Services (PCS) is rolling out the JobWatch workforce management system (pictured), from BigChange, to better manage its 120-strong team of engineers. PCS engineers provide up to 6,000 hours of support per week to customers across the UK, mostly within the workshops of bus and coach operators.

Thirty PCS engineers have been equipped with internet-enabled tablets as part of its phased implementation, which will see the firm eventually replace all paper-based systems and its existing software.

Second, construction, plant and rail services operator Story Contracting is reporting improved fleet visibility and driver performance since implementing Verizon Connect’s Mobile Resource Management (MRM).

As well as driver location and vehicle status information, the Carlisle-based operator wanted the capability to see which of its 300 drivers was using which of its 230 vehicles, in the event of an incident. With MRM’s Driver ID function, the company can access information for an incident at a particular time “in just a few clicks”. Verizon also offers this information via its Spotlight mobile app.

Third, Telford-based Cartwrights Waste Disposal Services has rolled out new software for live monitoring of vehicles. Using PurGo, from VWS Software Solutions, Cartwrights now has a paperless operation, with real-time data which, it says, is boosting productivity and reducing costs. “We now track every vehicle and have live feedback from collection crews,” says Scott Smith, operations manager.
