UK technician picks up runner’s up prize at DAF awards 21 February 2012

The DAF European Technician of the Year 2012 Award has been won by Rinze Louwsma of Cosmo Bolsward, in the Netherlands.

The single runner-up, beaten into second place only narrowly, was Tom Yelland from UK dealer Wessex DAF, headquartered in Newton Abbott, Devon.

The European final involved 10 examinations, with finalists asked to demonstrate their skills in four theoretical tests and six practicals – each solving malfunctions on the engine, electronic systems and driveline.

"DAF organises the European Technician of the Year competition to underline the importance of professional workshop technicians," states Johan Drenth, aftersales director of DAF Trucks.

"Modern trucks are high-tech vehicles, and a broad and deep technical knowledge is needed to be able to work on them. In addition, a mechanic is the business card in the workshop of the DAF dealer, and he or she plays an important role when it comes to customer satisfaction," he adds.

Yelland was also congratulated by Tony Shepherd, DAF Trucks aftersales service manager. "Tom was representing the entire UK dealer network and we all congratulate him on such a fantastic achievement."
