Wrings’ driver training adds 1mpg to Euro 6 Mercedes Actros 15 July 2015

Wrings Transport’s first four Euro 6 trucks – all Actros 2545 tractor units with flat-floored BigSpace cabs – are outperforming its Euro 5 trucks to the tune of one mile per gallon.

In part, the Avonmouth haulier and transport contractor believes that's due to the HGVs themselves, but it is also hailing the driver training it received from local dealer City West Commercials as "priceless".

Managing director Stuart Wring explains that within a week of City West's driver-trainer Justyn Marshman delivering his first round of instruction, fuel returns from his two long distance units shot up from 9.75 and 9.49 mpg to 10.22 and 10.17 mpg respectively.

"We saw an incredible improvement in fuel-efficiency on those two vehicles as a direct result of Justyn's input," insists Wring.

Wrings Transport runs a dual-marque fleet of 32 tractor units, which also includes 11 Euro 5 Actros and the rest from an unnamed "Swedish marquee".

As well as planning for a second visit by Justyn Marshman, Wrings Transport has now promoted one of its own experienced drivers, Shaun Mulhall, to in-house driver-trainer. He, too, will receive instruction from Mercedes-Benz on how to get the best from the firm's Euro 6 Actros.

Meanwhile, City West Commercials, which maintains and inspects Wrings Transport's Actros under five-year Mercedes-Benz R&M contracts, will also shortly be supplying two new 7.5-tonne Atego curtainsiders.

"City West employs some good people and provides a first-class service," explains Wring.

"I have no doubt that as an all-round package – so based not only on fuel-efficiency but also on other factors, such as driver acceptability and back-up – Mercedes-Benz trucks are the best on the market right now."

For Marshman, driver training is all about promoting a defensive style at the wheel: "One that makes the best possible use of momentum and helps drivers to extract the maximum benefit from the different transmission modes and other technology on the latest Mercedes-Benz trucks."
