1,690-bus emissions busting retrofit completes at De Lijn 14 February 2011

Belgian bus operator De Lijn has completed a €9.4m retrofit campaign to reduce emissions from 1,690 buses, with the last 247 now fitted with Eminox's SCRT.

SCRT combines a continuously regenerating trap (CRT) with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to cut PM (particulate matter) and NOx.

According to Freddy Van Steenberghe, department head at De Lijn, its city buses in Antwerp, Ghent and Bruges, along with regional and inter-city buses across Limburg, Brabant, East- and West-Flanders and Antwerp, are now saving an estimated 80,520kg of NOx per year.

The bus operator started working with Eminox in 2001 on a retrofit programme to reduce PM emissions. In this first phase, a total of around 1,500 Eminox CRT systems, claimed to cut PM emissions by more than 90%, were fitted to buses.

Then, when De Lijn wanted to address NOx pollution from diesel engines, the operator started trials of the Eminox SCRT system. Its test bus had a data logger and modem that continuously monitored NOx reduction in real-time and proved reliability over 50,000km.

Van Steenberghe, who pioneered De Lijn's emissions reduction programme, says: "By fitting Eminox's SCRT systems, our bus fleet now has the lowest emissions in Europe. The SCRT system consistently achieves 75—80% reduction in NOx, delivering emissions performance better than Euro 5."

And he adds: "The quality of the system made it an easy choice for us to select Eminox … with the added bonus of its products being exceptionally good value for money."
